Journey's End

Dennis Stanhope is the main character in the play Journeys End. He is presented as a company commander in WW1. It is not said in the play how old he is exactly but he is described as no more than a boy and thus could be estimated at virtually 20 or 21 years old. discolour though he is only a boy he has already obtained a Military Cross which is quite a feat for only a boy. This in itself shows the extent of Stanhopes capabilities as a commander. Stanhope is very much the triggerman of the play. He is a very complex individual and he is imperfection which is a surprising trait for a potential hoagie. At the start of the play, Stanhope isnt present so the extension get an idea some him through the assessments of his colleagues. The first mental picture the audience receives is that of intrepid, an officer of a different regiment. He asks the headspring how is the dear fresh boy (another showing of Stanhopes issue age) drinking like a fish, as usual? This gives a very important insight into Stanhopes life. Hardy then says he drank a whole bottle in one hour 14 minutes again this shows the extent of Stanhopes problem with drinking. In a way it is understandable. Everyone knows of the horror people experienced in the First World War so it is accepted as an escape route for Stanhope. Also Hardy talks about how Stanhope shouldnt be the company commander and that Osborne should do it because of Stanhopes state. However Osborne is a dear friend of Stanhopes and then defends him, but Osborne does have to realise that Stanhope is on the verge of hurly burly and so his nerves wont be in top form. One thing that does show from Osborne and hardys first discussion is how scared Hardy is of Stanhope. As Hardy prepares to leave Osborne asks hardy if h ell wait for Stanhope to arrive.
